FreeStyle philosophy is a playful vernacular for creative expression that balances the value domains of the good, the true, and the beautiful. However, as the name’s whimsical playfulness suggests, it places more emphasis on the creative act itself, situating more stably in the aesthetic domain of the beautiful.
You see, creativity has its own dharma, or purposes unique unto itself. It’s not that it can’t include objective truths, scientific discoveries, and important moral concerns—it’s just that the primal act of creating itself places these as secondary tributaries. They are important, but more so in the integration of creativity than in the pure expression itself.
Part of why this is important is that creativity can be individuating, meaning it processes and transforms painful and violent aspects of the human experience, opening domains of healing intelligence. These kinds of creative movements, dealing with primal life force, have an interpersonal, psycho-social, subjective quality that simply cannot be constrained by purely cognitive frameworks.
Sometimes, to be truly alive, we need to express first and consider the meaning and consequences second. If we were to look purely through the categories of right and wrong, we would miss the point entirely. The point is—evolution is happening through us, as us. Creativity is an opening of channels of expression, giving room for primal life force energy to flow.
The cost of denying, repressing, and suppressing these instincts is very high. Ultimately, in view of the great work, the creative act should be reviewed and tempered by the imperatives of objective and moral truths. But never at the cost of denying the creative instinct itself.
The thing is, we discover truths about ourselves and the world when we become creative. We move through the landscapes of psyche and soma, from part A to part B, and in this journey of discovery, we are transformed. If we remain constrained, contrived, and limited by fears and false beliefs about our creative potential or intrinsic creative capacities, we will not be able to really experience the root of health and happiness. We will also miss countless opportunities to give our real creative gifts to the world.
We all need an avenue of expression, a modality that galvanizes our soul and moves us into ecstasy, illuminating the dream of the world. FreeStyle philosophy is an expression of this imperative—an open-source potentiality of the mind dancing at large.
